convenience and large-size friendliness, with friendly people and fun activities!  Join the kids from 8-80 at Martha Rivers Park for soccer, sliding boards, swing sets and walking!  Its a hub for mothers with strollers and anyone who enjoys getting a little exercise (or a lot!) !

 

If you prefer big city amenities, it’s a quick 25 minute drive to Charlotte!  The Charlotte Douglas International Airport is even closer…a 15 to 20 minute drive and the world is at your feet!

 

For outside fun, visit the US National Whitewater Center (20 minutes), an Olympic training site US National Whitewater Center in Charlottefor Whitewater Slalom Kayaking and a great resource for family events from whitewater rafting to climbing walls, zip lines and bicycle trails…or flatwater kayaking!  I love just people watching!  You don’t have to be an extreme sports enthusiast to enjoy meeting people from all over the world…or just having a tasty treat and cool beverage from the restaurant as you enjoy the day!

Maybe a walk on the Gastonia Greenway would appeal — it’s right in the middle of town!  I almost always run into (sometimes literally!) someone I know, either bicycling, skating, running or walking!

Gastonia's Crowder's Mountain park is well known for climbing activitiesOnly 15 minutes from downtown Gastonia is Crowder’s Mountain…a great place to climb, you can easily walk on foot up the 200+ steps to the beautiful view at the top — and it’s a great place to see the area!  Or, if you’re more adventurous, bring your ropes and gear and climb the rock walls of the mountain!

 

Only 15 minutes from water activities, get your boat and water skis read for fun on the area lakes!  There are numerous boat launches and great venues for picnics every weekend!  Lake Wylie is the closest lake; part of the Catawba River chain, it is accessible at numerous points around Gastonia.  It’s a great place for motorboating, sailing or fishing!

 

For history and culture, Gastonia’s Schiele Nature Museum offers everything from a great gift shop to school outings!  And Belmont’s Daniel Stowe Botanical Garden rivals anything you’ll find for botanical information, including a large party venue and an Orchid Conservatory!

You’ll be hard pressed to find a friendlier destination, where people are truly “down to earth!”
